Neel-Schaffer brings ‘Smart Code’ design to MSU community

Neel-Schaffer assisted in the planning and design of The Gin on Russell Street, an $8 million, four-story condominium development in Starkville that is within walking distance of the Mississippi State University campus.

Neel-Schaffer’s services for the project included geotechnical investigation, topographic and boundary surveys, site design, stormwater design, materials testing, and construction administration.

This four-story condo development is the start of the transformation of the Russell Street corridor. The transition utilizes the Smart Code design concept, which brings buildings closer to the street, and adds landscaping, sidewalks, and on-street parking.

Building closer to the street provides more room for site development. This encourages slower automobile speeds, which increases traffic safety, and creates streets that are more conducive to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. In a University town, this nature of design is beneficial to the community and will help bridge the gap between the City of Starkville and the Mississippi State Campus.
