3.4-mile project includes widening, a roundabout, 5 bridges and 9 retaining walls
Neel-Schaffer is providing construction engineering and inspection services for a $93 million project that includes the next phase of improvements for SR 317 (Apison Pike) near Chattanooga, TN.
The 3.4-mile, multi-year project will widen Apison Pike from two to five lanes and add bike lanes and sidewalks. It includes a new intersection with a roundabout at Tallant Road, five bridges and nine retaining walls. The proposed bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is approximately 1,600 feet long and will eliminate an at-grade crossing.
In addition to overseeing roadway and bridge improvements/additions, Neel-Schaffer is providing CE&I services for the installation of storm drains, approximately 800 feet of box culverts, and a pedestrian box. Also included are water, sewer, gas, electrical, communication, and petroleum utilities inspections services.
Numerous challenges have developed during construction with constructability issues and utility conflicts. Neel-Schaffer has identified the issues early, provided alternative solutions, and coordinated with the TDOT to resolve issues and keep the project on schedule.
The scheduled completion date for the project is June 2025. Currently, the project is ahead of schedule and should be completed well in advance of the contract completion date.
