Busy Hub City corridor gets much-needed makeover
Neel-Schaffer provided topographic survey, geotechnical investigation, cultural resource survey, and coordination with utility companies for relocation of existing utilities for the Fourth Street Improvement project in Hattiesburg.
Due to increased traffic along the east to west Fourth Street corridor, the project provided much needed roadway improvements and expansion for area motorists.
The $5.2 million project was divided into two phases, involving work to widen a two-lane open-ditch road into a three-lane curb-and-gutter road, with drainage improvements, sidewalk and landscaping. Phase one involved about a mile of roadway from 25th Avenue to Hutchinson Avenue, and phase two continued on to North Street, totaling approximately 1.3 miles.
The project also includes construction of 1.3 miles of sidewalk, providing pedestrian access along Fourth Street. This provides a safety enhancement feature that greatly benefits children of the Hutchinson Avenue area who walk to school.
Funding was provided by MDOT, with matching funds from the City of Hattiesburg.
